Yes. I don’t know a lot about it if I am honest, you are probably best off checking Luke and Lauras answers but it is very pretty and amazing. One of the best things I have seen in my life was walking through the countryside in Italy and seeing a huge cloud of fireflies in a field! <3
Its been a while since I studied bioluminescence, but what I remember of it was fascinating. Best examples are in the DEEP DEEP ocean where fish will use it to lure things in to eat. Never go into the light when in the ocean, just don’t do it!
Bacteria can also use it to communicate too, which is pretty cool in my eyes. Its called quorum sensing, once enough bacteria get together, they light up.
All about those enzymes though – luciferase is the one you’ll be looking for for bio luminescence.
